Aviation Psychology

Professor Matthias Schmidt has been working in the field of aviation psychology and human factors since 2013 and advises aviation companies, flight schools and pilots. His area of expertise covers human behavior and its impact on safety and efficiency in aviation operations. His focus is on the application of psychological principles to improve the performance of aviation personnel.

His areas of specialization include:

- Cognitive processes: Investigating the perception, decision-making, attention and memory performance of pilots, air traffic controllers and other aviation personnel.

- Stress and fatigue: Analyzing how stress, fatigue and emotional states affect behavior and developing strategies to better manage these factors.

- Mental health: Supporting flight personnel in coping with the mental demands of aviation. Prof. Schmidt also uses the BASA analysis tool to assess working conditions in the aviation sector.

The BASA provides valuable insights into:
- Ergonomics: the design of cockpits, instruments and controls to create an effective and safe working environment.

- Communication: Examining the interaction between pilots, air traffic controllers and ground staff to reduce misunderstandings and minimize errors.

- Error prevention and management: Analysis of human errors, their causes and the development of systems that prevent errors or minimize their effects.

With his expertise, Prof. Schmidt contributes to the sustainable improvement of safety and efficiency in aviation.
