Gender equality in academia? Dis/equalities in dealing with sexist practices in STEM subjects

Research results of a qualitative analysis of women's experiences in the academic STEM sector published

The journal for feminist political science "Femina Politica" publishes the results of research conducted by M.A. Bernadette Rohlf, M.A. Susanne Lerche and Dr. Monique Ritter.

How do women talk about their experiences and their positioning in the academic STEM field in a male-dominated place like a university? From the qualitative analysis of interviews with women at different career stages in STEM subjects at Saxon universities, common patterns of explanation were identified. Depending on the context, gender is emphasized by male colleagues and superiors or dethematized by the women themselves by orienting themselves towards the supposedly genderless ideal of meritocracy.
